September 2009 - Updates by Andrea Whalen

Jeff continues to make huge strides in his recovery. He is doing all the things kids do. Besides pestering his brother and sisters, he continues to do well in school and works hard to help his mom and dad at home. After countless surgeries Jeff has full range of motion in his arms and his face is looking better all the time. Jeff has another surgery scheduled for October in Sacramento and will have several more surgeries as he grows.

It continues to remain very difficult for the Elam family to get the care Jeff needs. Jeff's father, Gene had a biking accident last November 2008 which has left him with permanent brain damage. He was on partial disability working part time until July 2009. He has now lost his job and does as many odd jobs as he can find to do in Arveda, Wyoming. The loss of his job has left them until November to find a place to live as their housing was part of his salary. Mary continues to work as kitchen manager at the Flying J. Mary and the girls also try to clean as many houses as they can.

They are now facing the winter in Wyoming with no for sure income and place to live. Flying J has filed chapter 11 bankruptcy. Mary and Gene hope to relocate before winter to provide a place to live for their 4 children with more opportunity for employment, education and support. With mounting medical bills, old car, and continuing to pay on their mortgage in Biloxi. After hurricane Katrina, they still have been unable to resolve their mortgage on that property that no longer exists. They continue to look for employment and their desire is to provide the best life for their children and continue to see Jeff to full recovery.

Sorry it has been so long since we checked in with everyone, hello to everyone and I hope this finds you all laughing and happy . We had a good Thanksgiving , I hope you all did too. Dinner was a little hectic since we fed 16 but it was great. Kids were running everywhere but we met some realy great people from the local shelter and I think we made some new friend. Gene my husband had a accident on the 15th he is doing better now but dinner was hard on him so everyone laoded into my car early and I took them home by 6 , life is harder now that Gene can't help he is my rock and without him to lean on I need alot of prayers for strength everyone thinks I am so strong but I am only strong because I know he is standing behind me.

Hello from Wyoming

Hi everyone,

Finally I am on thanks to the assistance of the web developer, sometimes I wonder how I get along in this world with such little computer savy.
Jeff is doing realy good , infact his physical therapist and his ocupational therapist have both lowered his sessions to 2 per week which is great news because it frees me upto try to find more houses to clean yeah!!!!! Jeff is going to be a vampire pimp this year for holloween he is excited and he is always so okay with things like not being able to wear makeup. Winter is getting very close and we are busy getting everyone ready for the cold weather the goats and chickens the dogs and cats the horse and of course the kids its gets down to 30 below here so trying to keep jeff warm this winter is going to be a chore he hurts real bad when it gets cold so we are buying him warm clothes he can layer one piece at a time .... I don't worry much about things like the bills and how to afford warm clothes because I know that GOD has his hand on us it brings me piece and keeps me from going nuts.
